Being a bachelor, learning about motherhood

Well, I (Dan) am here by myself while Sarah is in CA - I thought an update would be prudent.  There was a nice article about Sarah’s grandpa written in their local newspaper - read about Gerald Bruton here.

I spent last weekend at school working as the auditorium tech guy for a conference that wanted to use our new facility.  (It’s really exciting to be able to use our building for things like this)  The conference organizer: a women’s study called MotherWise.  As you may have guessed from the title, it’s about learning about being a good mother.  Fascinating information for me, of course.  There were a couple of times I felt necessary to step out.  Anyway, this week is pretty normal, except no high schoolers.  They are on their spring camping trip.
Another sad event to think about - a van from Taylor University was hit by a semi and 5 people died.  My twin brother, sister-in-law, and two teachers here in Chengdu are alumni at the school.  Think about them when you talk to the Father tonight.  You can read about the incident at this website

Sarah’s Grandfather

Sarah’s grandpa has passed away.  We are rejoicing that he is now with our Father, but saddened at him not being with us anymore.  Sarah heads back to California tomorrow.

Easter, TV/DVD, SAT, 2000

First of all, we hope you had a wonderful Easter Sunday!  The special day allowed us the privilege of joining with other fellowships around the city and celebrating the resurrection together.
Much of the rest of the day was spent shopping around for a television.  We found one that we liked and was much less than we hoped we wouldn’t have to spend - and we got a new dvd player along with it.  No more people looking like smurfs on our television…
My (Dan’s) students are currently working on the SAT.  Not to be confused with the college prep exam, the Stanford Achievement Test is being given to every grade this week to see how they fare compared to the rest of those who take this test.  It is a stretching experience for the number of kids for whom English is not their primary language, but all subjects are being tested and they seem to be doing alright.
Our website statistics have informed me that over the past 8 months, there have been over 2,000 visits to our site and almost 6,000 individual page loads.  Thanks for checking up on us - if anyone is wondering how to get ahold of us, the website can help you with all the information.
A matter to lift up to the Father:  Sarah’s grandfather, Mr. Bruton, has been diagnosed with Leukemia and his situation has worsened rapidly.  Sarah will be traveling back on Friday to spend some time with him and family for two weeks.  We are asking Dad for Him to wait a while before taking Mr. Bruton home so that Sarah can have some time with him.

New pics and Easter program

Pictures from last weekend’s middle school trip our now posted on the pics page. Check them out!  If you missed our pics from Malaysia you can see them in Album 5 - pics from past events.
Thursday evening was the culmination of weeks of work for our school as we put on our annual Easter program.  Each grade was responsible for a portion of the Passion week, and the dance clubs and bell choirs also performed.  Sarah led both of the bell choirs very well, and Dan was in charge of the sound, lights and video.  It was our first chance to showcase the auditorium for the community, and it was a great time.
Today is a break from school!

Middle School Trip

This past weekend was spent with all 40 of our middle school kids as we chaperoned their spring trip.  Friday was part of the experience (and a day off of school for the kids!) where we did a character activity in the morning, went to get shaokao (skewered spicy food) for lunch, an amusement park for the afternoon, pizza for dinner, and a movie and activities in the evening before a lock-in that night at school.
Saturday we traveled to Green Lake Resort for Saturday and Sunday.  We did some boating, bowling, biking, basketball, rock (boulder) climbing, and ate lots of Chinese food.  It was a tiring but fun time!  Pictures will be up in the next few days of the trip.  We’re currently wrapping up preparations for the Easter program this Thursday.  Should be fun!

Ready to fly…

I’m picking up my "fei ji (plane) piao (tickets)" today and will fly back to Santa Rosa for two weeks to visit Grandma & Grandpa B.  Everyone else in SR, I will be happy to see you too.  :-D  Praise the Lord for a travel agent named "Rainbow" who speaks English and found round trip tickets for $800!!  Much better than the $1300 that United offered…

encouragement conference

This weekend Sarah and I attended an encouragement conference in downtown Chengdu.  The leaders of the conference were a diverse group of people from cities all over the U.S. It was incredibly relaxing, and…well… encouraging!  Great worship, inspiring messages, and a resulting desire to remember our "first love" through a call to understand the Father’s Heart.
In other news, the high was 81 degrees today.  It was a wonderful day.
